KUMBAKONAM KADAPPA

My mom, often makes this recipe at home for breakfast... When ever we go for temple visits ,we start in the morning time and my mom mostly packs kadappa with idly for breakfast...
After finishing our darshan in the temple..me dad, mom and anna sits near the temple pond and have our breakfast and the place near the pond will be so calm and breeze.... And for me that was the most luxurious breakfast ever had in my life..the kadappa I have posted is my MIL'S version... This slightly vary's from my moms version..

And kadappa goes well with idly and dosa...it's my whole family's favorite side dish for idly..:)And if you haven't tasted it, don't wait.. Give a try at once and you will also like it..

Ingredients :

Yellow moong dal(paasi paruppu) - 1/4 cup
Onion - 1(big sized)
Tomato - 1&1/2
Turmeric powder - a pinch
Lemon juice - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaf - few
Coriander - few

To Grind :
Oil - 1/3 tsp
Fennel - 1/4 tsp
Coconut - 1 tbs
Green chilly - 8
Ginger - 1 tbs(chopped)
Garlic - 4(small )(chopped)

To Temper:
Oil - 1 tbs
Bay leaf - 2
Clove - 2
Cinnamon - small piece

Method:

Take a deep kadai add little oil, fennel seeds and green chilly fry for 3 mins. Then grind it along with the ingredients to grind ,with little water into a smooth paste.

Then pressure cook moong dal with 1/2 tomato up-to 3 whistle. And mash it thoroughly with a ladle.

Take a pressure cooker add oil,bay leaf, clove and cinnamon then add in the coconut paste and fry till oil leaves by its sides.

Add onion, tomato and saute well till it mashes, then add mashed moong dal with enough water to boil. And boil well for 5 mins till it becomes light thick.
Then add curry leaf and coriander. And finally squeeze in lemon, serve hot with idly or dosa.

Notes:

Instead of grinding garlic along with coconut you can crush it and fry along with onion too.

My moms version of kadappa will be white without turmeric, but my Mil adds turmeric,so its your choice , but no difference in taste.

You can also add veggie(cauliflower or potato) of your choice it enhances taste.
