SAKKARAVALLI KIZHANGU POLI/SWEET POTATO POLI

Poli is a traditional sweet flat bread made in India in the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Andhra pradesh.Let me start 2013 <:-p first post, with my most Favorite sweet recipe....Sakkaravalli kizhangu poli sounds interesting right...:) this is what i felt when i heard it for the first time...After I’ve tasted them I can’t understand why I waited :-w this long to try this recipe.

When ever i get sweet potato, i pressure cook and have it with some whipped cream or mix it with rava to make rotis. But when i visited my friends place and she made this sweet potato poli for me...choooo sweet of her, she made my day...:)i was flattered by the taste.I'm not a big fan of poli made with channa dal it's because of the tedious job of puran making. But the taste of sweet potato was entirely different. And i’m here to tell you not only are they so simple to make but they taste unbelievably delicious! Enjoy

Ingredients:

For Dough:
All purpose flour or maida - 1 cup(heaped)
Salt - A pinch
Cooking Oil - 1/2 tbs
Water - 1/4 cup

For Puran:
Sweet potato - 1
Sugar - 1/4 cup
Cardamom - A pinch
Coconut - 3 tbs
powdered cashew - 1 tbs
Ghee - For roasting

Method:

For Dough:
Take a bowl add maida, salt mix it well make a dent add cooking oil, water.

Knead the dough to smooth and pliable add water if needed, the dough should not be too stiff and dry,it should be soft, smooth and pliable. And leave it aside for 1 to 2 hrs

For Puran:
Pressure cook sweet potato for 6 whistle and mash it well.

Add sugar, cardamom and powdered cashew mix well and make sure that puran is stiff enough to make small balls.Add coconut when your about to roll out poli.

For poli:
Make small balls of maida and puran. Take a plastic sheet have some oil by the side, add some oil to the sheet and start pressing the maida from center towards out to make a round shape.

Place the puran inside and cover it all sides and again start pressing from center towards out and you a good round shape.

Place in a tava add little gee, and roast the poli till it turns brown and crispy. And poli is ready to enjoy...)

Notes:

If u find the puran is still stiff after you mash add to the mixer to make a smooth paste.

If you reduce the sweet potato or coconut for the above mentioned, accordingly reduce the sugar, otherwise the mixture may turn sticky.

You can also prepare the puran one day before and refrigerate it . But add the coconut when your about to roll out.
